Here are some practical ways to extend the life of your electric tricycle battery, taking into account battery type differences, usage habits, and maintenance tips:

1. Charging Management

Shallow charge and shallow discharge‌

Lead-acid batteries should be charged when the remaining power is 30%. Lithium batteries are recommended to be charged between 20% and 80%.

Avoid full discharge (a charge below 20% will shorten the lifespan by 60%)

Charging time control‌

Charging time is 6-8 hours in summer and can be extended to 8-10 hours in winter to avoid overcharging

After the charger turns green, float charge the lead-acid battery for 30 minutes (in summer) or 2 hours (in winter).

Charging environment

Choose a cool and ventilated place, avoid high temperature (>35℃) or humid environment to charge

Preheat the battery before charging in winter (e.g., store in a garage or protect with a heat shield)

2. Usage Habit Optimization

Avoid extreme operations‌

Use pedals to assist when starting/going uphill to reduce high current discharge (to prevent lead sulfate crystallization)

Driving at a constant speed, sudden acceleration/sudden braking will increase power consumption by more than 30%

Load Control‌

Overloading by 50kg will reduce battery life by 10%-15% and accelerate battery aging.

Clean the cargo box regularly to reduce the weight of the vehicle

3. Daily maintenance

Battery Care‌

Check the oxidation of the electrodes every three months, clean the dust and keep the ventilation

When not in use for a long time, recharge the battery once a month to prevent power loss (lead-acid batteries may become scrapped if they are idle and run out of power for 3 months)

Environmental protection

Avoid exposure to the sun in summer (high temperature causes electrolyte evaporation)

Using a thermal cover in winter can increase battery capacity by 15% at -10°C

4. Hardware Upgrade

Battery Selection‌

For lead-acid batteries, choose graphene (cycle life 500-600 times), and for lithium batteries, choose lithium iron phosphate (cycle life 2000 times).

When replacing, ensure that the voltage/capacity matches the original vehicle parameters

System Optimization‌

Upgrade BMS battery management system to improve charging and discharging efficiency

Installing a regenerative braking device can recover 5%-10% of energy when going downhill

5. Fault warning

If the battery life suddenly drops by more than 20%, check whether the battery pack is broken or the plates are softened.

If the charging plug becomes hot, it needs to be handled immediately (oxide may cause a short circuit).

Through the above methods, the life of lead-acid batteries can be extended to 3-4 years, and that of lithium batteries to 5-8 years.
