Here's a practical guide to extending the battery life of your mobility scooter, compiled from authoritative sources:
1. Charging Management
Shallow charge and shallow discharge principle
Keeping the battery charge between 20% and 90% (avoiding deep discharge and long-term full charge) can extend the battery life to 1,500 cycles.
Avoid charging when the battery level is below 20% to prevent lithium dendrites from forming and damaging the battery.
Temperature control
In high temperature environments (>45°C), the device needs to be cooled for 1 hour before charging. In winter, the device needs to be preheated for 10 minutes before charging.
Keep the battery at 50%-60% when parked for a long time and recharge once a month.
2. Usage Habit Optimization
Riding style
Smooth acceleration/deceleration, reducing sudden braking and stopping, and reducing the impact of high current discharge on the battery
Prioritize pedal assist when starting (applicable to three-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles)
Charging specifications
Use the original charger. After the green light turns on, float charge for ≤1 hour in summer and ≤2 hours in winter.
After fast charging, it is recommended to use slow charging to "smooth out" the differences in the battery cells, and slow charging should be done at least once a week.
3. Battery Type Selection
Battery Type Cycle Life Applicable Scenario
Lead-acid battery 300-500 times, limited budget, short distance travel
Lithium iron phosphate battery 2000 times long life, high frequency use
Sodium battery: 1,500 cycles, low-temperature resistance, emerging technology
Lithium iron phosphate batteries (such as BYD blade batteries) are preferred, as their lifespan is four times that of lead-acid batteries.
4. Environment and Maintenance
Storage conditions
Avoid exposure to sunlight and humid environments, and disconnect the negative terminal of the battery when parking for a long time.
Regularly check the terminal connection and battery cover vents for patency.
Seasonal Adjustment
In winter, tire pressure drops to 2/3 of the standard value, and charging time is extended by 20%.
Avoid charging in high temperatures in summer, and let it sit for 30 minutes before driving.
5. Fault warning
If the battery life drops by more than 30%, you need to check whether the battery pack is aging.
Batteries with abnormal conditions such as bulging or leakage need to be replaced immediately.
Through scientific use and maintenance, the battery life of elderly scooters can be extended by 2-3 years, significantly reducing replacement costs.
